Uncle in Byron Bay supports one-on-one mentoring relationships and has men called ‘uncles’ who attend activities and give their time to interact, work, learn and play with boys aged 6 to 12 years old. Uncle organises a wide range of activities and events including camps, snorkelling, fishing, tennis, skateboarding, bike riding, climbing, beach soccer, rugby, cricket, surfing, discussion dinners, treasure hunts, board games and many others.
The Uncle Project was initiated in Byron Bay in April 1997 by youth and community worker Michael Light and became an Incorporated Association in 1998. Through his work Michael recognized a need in boys which wasn’t being fulfilled – especially those he met in government youth detention centres. From his front room at home he began building the Uncle organization that exists today. He quickly gained the support of good local men and women in the community, who recognised the great need the project sought to address. Uncle is now run by a management committee of local members of our community, has over fifty members and is an incorporated association registered for DGR (deductible gift recipient) status with the ATO, i.e. all donations over $2 are tax deductible.
Uncle Byron Bay is funded by the local community and local and national business sponsors.

We’re here to organize activities and stuff that you’ll really enjoy for boys aged 6 to 12 years old. You can hang out with other boys, meet men who we call ‘uncles’ and learn new stuff. So have a look through the activity list below or visit The Uncle Project Facebook Page and see if there’s anything you’d like to do and let us know. If there’s an activity you’d like to do that you are interested in or if you wish to know more about Uncle then contact us and let us know. If we can do it, we’ll plan it!
If you’re a Mum who has a son between the ages of 6 and 12 who doesn’t have a dad around or has little contact with men on a day-to-day basis, The Uncle Project could help you. Mums often say that they love doing activities with their boys but there are some things they just can’t do (or are really bad at!) and they appreciate the help the men at Uncle can provide to do stuff like building billycart’s, clay pigeon shooting, rock climbing and just generally chatting about boy stuff!
If you think your boy could benefit from hanging out with the Uncle team contact us on: 02 6680 8582 or 0408 675 598 or visit the Want to Join section on the Uncle website
The Uncle Project is always looking for good men in the community to attend group activities and workshops. There are so many men out there who are fantastic role models and have valuable skills and we want you! If you’d like to make a difference and you’d like to learn more about how you can help, please contact The Uncle Project on: 02 6680 8582 or 0408 675 598 for an informal meeting.
