Winter School Holiday Family Fun in Byron Bay and Beyond!

Wow, although this term seems to have whizzed by in the blink of an eye, these last few weeks have really felt like they’ve dragged their feet… or it could be me not wanting to crawl out from under my doona on these cold winter mornings!
I’m actually really excited about these school holidays. Apart from not having to get up early and do the school run 5 days a week plus after-school activities; there’s a heap of fun new activities that have been added to the Calendar of Events. Plus, we’ll be doing a few more of our popular Winter Day Trips to give you ideas and inspiration for fun days out with the fam!
La’ Studio 352 in Byron Bay are offering School Holiday Sewing Fashion & Design Classes For Boys & Girls 7yrs to Teens Your children will learn to design & make their own fashion accessory and clothing with Fashion Designer Simone Ellis.
Rap It – Kids Rap Workshop for 7-15 year olds at Byron YAC is all about giving voice to the inner feelings which kids are not always able to put words to; the goal being to show kids how creative and unique (and FUN!) that voice can be!
The Clay Barn are putting on some awesome 3 hour Kids Pottery Workshops for ages 8+. Kids will experience wheel throwing, coil building, decoration and texturing.
Or how about creating a Paper Mache Fruit Bowl or a Butterfly Feeder at The Creative Tree in Alstonville! They also offer a wonderful story time session every Tuesday at 10am for all ages!
Winter Nights Fairy Lights – Brunswick Heads Fairy Trail The fairy houses will be lit from 5:30 to 7pm on Saturday 8 July. There will be fairy dancing with pixie and gnome musicians and a wishing well in the park next to the library and some new fairy houses too!

Circus Arts is a fully equipped, 1200sqm, indoor space offering a range of unique activities from kinder to teens (and adults too!) Try Flying trapeze, Indoor climbing, Circus skills, Aerial Skills, Parkour, Gymnastics to name a few and… if your little one isn’t quite ready to try a class, there’s always the fantastic playspace for littlies to have fun while you can sit back and enjoy a cuppa from the onsite cafe and take advantage of the free wifi.
Spaghetti Circus in Mullumbimby also offer half and full day Circus Programs and provide foundation training in aerials, tumbling, acro-balance, mini-tramp, juggling, hula hoops and much more! The classes are designed to be fun, social and supportive AND sell out fast so get your name down quick!
Also keeping your kids active and off the couch are Ballina Gymnastics who this holidays are offering a morning session on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays during the holidays. These half day classes are open to all – so if you want to try – this is the ideal opportunity!
KidzKlub are offering their half day (afternoon) school holiday program in the centre of town at Byron Bay Community Centre and half and full day sessions at the Lennox Head Cultural and Community Centre. With areas for art and craft, drama, sports and games; the kids can play freely and creatively in each area with the fabulous equipment and materials or join in with structured sessions facilitated by qualified staff.
STILL INDOORS BUT…
If your child is feeling creative, there are some fantastic crafty workshops being held by Meet Make Create for children age 5+ where children spend a few hours immersed in artistic creativity. Classes range from Candle Making to Clay Mobile workshops.
Bricks4Kidz are back with their awesome special feature school holiday LEGO workshops at the Cavanbah Centre. This time, experience the world of Brick City Engineers in this creative school holiday program! Half and full day workshop takes place at the Cavanbah Centre in Byron bay on Monday 10 July.

One of the all time fave’s is School Skate Camp. Byron Bay Skateboard School is offering just 3 days of School Holiday Skate Camp this Winter Hols. Join them for a tour around all the best skateparks in the area and spend a full day skating with the pros!
Based at The Farm Byron Bay, Farm Kids is holding a number of their fabulous hands-on 3 hour workshops for kids with their exciting themed workshops focused on Pigs and Cows, Medicinal Herbs, Planting, Chooks and Bee Fun. They are also offering their new Farm Kids Mini Farmers Program! Suitable for 7-15 y/o, this full day program introduces children to real life farming. They get their hands dirty and work along side real farmers.
And what is a school holiday without a trip to the Macadamia Castle? Not only that, they also offer 2 special hands-on school holiday programs – Wildlife Guardians for 7-11 year olds and Keeper for a Day for ages 12+ (yes adults can do this one too!!). Learn about conservation and caring for our native wildlife and handle Lizards, snakes and crocodiles!
SHOWS & ENTERTAINMENT!
What a way to launch into the Winter School hols with a weekend packed full of fun delivered in true Brunswick Picture House style. Bunny Racket will be rocking the joint this Saturday 1 July and on Sunday 2 July they will be presenting the all ages film event – Dumbo. There will be fun games and activities as a wrap around to this Disney classic! Heaps more shows happening too with SNAZZTASTIC! A Dandyman Comedy Show and The Vegetable Plot Kids show.
Plus the Pighouse Flicks Lounge Cinema in Byron is putting on some great kids movies this holidays including A Dogs Purpose (PG) Despicable Me 3 (PG) and The Diary of a Wimpy Kid (PG).
Not to be left out are some fabulous science and craft creations to be made with FREE activities at the local libraries including Frushi Bento Boxes and Branch Wrapping & Weaving at Byron Bay; Basic Origami, Squishy Circuits and Party Games at Lennox Head; Busy Beads at Brunswick Heads; and the Science of Bubbles and DIY papercraft at Ballina Library.
Other FREE activities, events and workshops throughout the school holidays include NAIDOC Week Activities and a Meet & Greet with Poppy & Branch from the movie Trolls at Ballina Fair
Talking about NAIDOC WEEK – there are some fantastic fun and free cultural days taking place in Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and Ballina. Cultural showcases include Aboriginal Dancers, music and loads of activities for the kids. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. NAIDOC Week is held in the first full week of July. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.
There are also some awesome FREE activities and events for girls age 12+ at Future Dreamers Girls Club based in central Byron Bay with titles such as Magic Potions with Mojo Minx, Watercolour Lettering, Learn to Skate with Flavio, Life Notes with the Galaxy Girls, Free Yo Self, Oracle Deck, Mandala Magic, FUTURE DREAMERS Wild Warriors and Bush heART + Medicine … I want to go to them all!!!
