Love it or hate it 6 weeks of School Holidays have arrived!!!
The sun is shining the sky is blue… and although there’s not much rain in sight for our parched earth, holidaymakers and locals are making the most of what the Northern Rivers has to offer.
Now, I’m sure that many of you will have family stuff happening over Christmas Week but I can tell you that Byron4Kids What’s On Guide is quite simply choca-block with activities and events for the holidays for all ages plus heaps of family friendly options for you to enjoy.

Fidgety kids and in need of a family favourite? Hunky Dory in Byron Bay (opposite Woolies) offers traditional fish & chips & variety of salads plus lots of children’s menu options. They are super family friendly with kids colouring in and fish games (that adults secretly love too!)

Big Scrub Nature Play who offer delightful Term Time Nature Playgroups for 2-6 year olds are also offering a School Holiday Program for ages 2-6 with an all-weather, all-outdoor playgroup for little explorers.

Either option is a great way to meet some new friends that share the same passion and improve your skateboarding skills. Suitable for kids aged 7 to 12 years.
Or how about getting down and dirty at The Farm Byron Bay! Farm Kids is holding a number of their fabulous hands-on 3 hour workshops for kids with their exciting themed farm animal or produce sessions. Also on offer is their Farm Kids Mini Farmers Program! Suitable for 7-15 y/o, this full day program introduces children to real life farming. They get their hands dirty and work alongside real farmers.
Circus Arts Byron Bay is a fully equipped indoor space offering a range of unique activities from kinder to thrill-seeking teens (and adults too!) Try Flying trapeze, Climbing wall, Circus skills, Aerial Skills, Parkour, Kinder & Pre-circus to name a few and…
further to popular demand they’ve included their exciting Ninja Play classes as an add on to their 1/2 & full day school holiday programs.
if your little one isn’t quite ready to try there’s always the fantastic playspace for littlies to have fun while you can sit back and enjoy healthy snacks & a cuppa from the onsite cafe.
Spaghetti Circus in Mullumbimby also offer half and full day Circus Programs and provide foundation training in aerials, tumbling, acro-balance, mini-tramp, juggling, hula hoops and much more! There are Full Day Workshops for 7-9 & 10-14 year olds, and Half Day Junior Workshops for 4-6 year olds.

Whatever the weather it’s always fun to play a game or two at Ballina Tenpin Bowling and when better to go than in the school holidays when they have a special price of just $16 per person for 2 games.
They also light up the lanes between 12 and 4pm and from 7pm onward for GLOW bowling sessions every day of the holidays!
If your child is feeling creative, there are some awesome workshops which have been added to our What’s On Guide – a number of which are FREE.
Come learn how to carve sand like a pro with Sandman Steve from Sandology. In an unforgettable hour and a half you will learn how to make towers, archways, stairs, animals and balls out of just sand and water.
You’ll never look at sand the same way again. Workshops take place on Belongil beach in front of the Treehouse restaurant so there’s plenty of free parking. Bookings are essential as numbers are limited – visit our What’s On Guide for booking details.
Featuring industry leading guest teachers Blake John Wood & Paris Cavanagh along with the award winning faculty from Dance Lab Studios, our Summer Intensive will provide the most well rounded, versatile dance experience. Suitable for ages 7+ you can attend one or both days of this workshop which covers: Commercial Jazz – Contemporary – Lyrical – Ballet – Hip Hop – Musical Theatre – Drop – Kicks Jumps & Turns – Industry Talk – Hair & Make Up.
At Ballina Fair Shopping Centre from 13 – 17 Jan 2020 Kids of all ages will enjoy hands on creative fun with colourful creations with Sand Art. Every child will receive one FREE SandWizard Activity each per day at no cost to the customer. Customers will have the option to laminate their artwork for only $1. Drop in between 10am and 4pm outside Target.
and from 20 – 25 Jan, go along an experience the Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia shows, with shows every hour for FREE.

As usual, Brunswick Picture House has got a great line-up of interactive family shows happening over the holidays.
Talking Dogs – a playful and interactive show where some lucky children are allowed on stage to talk with Allen, do stunts with Erik and help Joel keep his act together.
The Space Cowboy, the world’s wildest record breaker presents a new show action packed with thrilling stunts and mental marvels. Watch sparks fly as this daredevil takes centre stage and risks his life with a 500,000 volt Tesla Coil!
Imaginitis starring Shorty Brown – Magic, bubbles and extreme silliness… it’s time to let your imagination run wild! This show is about discovering and embracing imagination, where Shorty takes the children on a magical journey exploring their own imagination — pirates, fairies, unicorns!!!
Imaginitis is a colourful, extremely silly, funny, and highly interactive show, including magic, bubbles, comedy and extreme slapstick. It’s a colourful adventure created to entertain our youngest audience of 3–8 year olds.
HOTA – Home of The Arts on the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise) have a fantastic week of fun lined up for kids and families with KIDS TAKE OVER – SAVE THE WORLD event on between 10 and 16 January. including their legendary Boxwars workshops & battle, plus 2 awesome kids shows: AIR PLAY and LASER BEAK MAN & Friends
Plenty of the activities and workshops are FREE kids including Eco Warrior Workshop, Technology In Play, The Slime-o-logy Project, Introduction to Puppetry and 10 minute dance parties but some do require booking to secure a place. Check our What’s On Guide for more details.
They also have a bunch of FREE movies happening on 16, 17 & 18 January with 10.30am showings of Sky High(PG), Ferm Gully – The Last Rainforest (G) and Captain Underpants (G)
It’s also worth noting that around the back of the building is Evandale Parklands. There’s a swimming lagoon with sandy beach, ample picnic areas with barbecues, plenty of shade under trees and a great fully fenced kids playground with two separate slides and climbing spaces (all underneath a shade sail). The toilet & shower amenities are second to none too! We’ve been to see a morning show at HOTA in the holidays and spent a lovely afternoon at the lagoon with a picnic afterwards

KIDS DISCOS, BINGO, COMEDY MAGIC SHOWS AND A WET & WILD WATERSLIDE WEEKEND!
Cherry Street Sports has a heap of fun and FREE activities to get involved in, starting the school holidays on Saturday 21 December with Little Cherries Christmas Party & Disco. On 9 Jan there’s a FREE Abra-KID-Abra Show from 11am – 2pm and on the weekend of 18-19 Jan they have a magical Wet & Wild Waterslide weekend with 4 massive waterslides – just $10 a session of $25 for an all day pass!
On Monday 6 & 13 January 2020 Club Lennox invite you along to kids bingo at $2 per child from 1-3pm with lots of prizes to be won and on Tuesday 7 January they are holding their Jungle themed kids disco with loads of prizes and dancing fun.
Apart from being a fabulous place to spend a day with the kids, The Macadamia Castle also offers an excellent school holiday program for kids (and adults) with some wonderful & popular workshops. They’ve also created a NEW WORKSHOP for budding photographers – see below!
CRITTER CAPTURE – PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP (Ages 12+)
In this workshop you will learn specialised animal photography from a qualified Keeper and expert photographer. Develop your skills while taking the unique opportunity to get up close and personal to a range of extraordinary animals. It’s also worth noting that if you have a CREATIVE KIDS Voucher still to redeem – you can use it towards this course making it just $25 for a whole days tuition!
WILDLIFE GUARDIANS (Ages 7 -11)
During the school holidays your kids can become Wildlife Guardians and spend the day with the keepers behind-the-scenes in the Animal Park.
KEEPER FOR A DAY (Ages 12+)
Teenagers can spend a day behind the scenes in the animal park with Macadamia Castle’s senior keepers during these school holidays. Find out what working in a captive animal facility is all about.
CREATURE KEEPER (for NDIS planholders and children with a disability)
We know that for children with a disability, interacting with animals can provide countless benefits towards general well-being, developing a sense of responsibility, social inclusion and increased functionality.This program offers a safe experience in small groups designed to build a participant’s independence, confidence, skills and knowledge of wildlife. Participants spend a day with our Head Keepers, learning about animals and how we care for them.

In Ballina, Australian Seabird Rescue are holding their weekday school holiday tours. Learn about seabird and sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation and release. The tour goes for approximately one hour and costs just $8 (CASH ONLY) per person. No booking required – just turn up on the day! NOTE: They are closed on all Public Holidays
There are some fabulous FREE inspirational activities and workshops being offered by the local libraries: Lennox Head, Byron Bay. Ballina Library, Brunswick Heads, including a LEGO Master competition, Claymation Magic and Sand Art plus all day daily craft at Lennox Head, Creative Writing Workshop with award winning author Jodie McLeod, Bushcraft Workshop, Seabin Foundation Workshop and a visit from Australian Seabird & Turtle Rescue at Brunswick Heads. 3D Animal Mask Making, Fairy Poppilina and Dreamworks Animation Exhibition virtual tour will be happening at Byron Bay Library and Claymation, Balloon Folding, Children’s Trivia Quiz, Paper Plane Workshop plus all day DIY Lego will be on at Ballina Library.

Or how about a special trip on the world’s first solar powered train – right here in Byron Bay. My kids were thrilled to take a trip on the train with their grandparents who were visiting from overseas last year. You can tie it in with lunch at The Sun Bistro which has an indoor play area as well as a lovely fenced and grassy outdoor area out the back.
