Spring School Holiday Fun in Byron Bay and beyond!

Once again we seem to have reached the end of the term in the blink of an eye. Seriously, does time speed up when you get older or is it just that you have so much to fit into a day that a week has slipped by before you know it?!
Well, whether you love them or loathe them, School Holidays are here… and Byron4Kids is here to help.
I’ve spent the past few weeks adding HEAPS of School Holiday Activities to the Calendar of Events… and even as I type this, more are coming in!!
Despite it being the busiest time of year it’s also really exciting to see all the wonderful events, workshops, classes and shows that local businesses put on for kids and families. There are quite a number we’ve got our eye on and we can’t wait to try them out and let you know all about them.

Spaghetti Circus won’t be running classes this term as they are part of Mullum Circus Fest. This utterly mesmerising festival showcases the incredible talents of circus artists from the well renowned, internationally acclaimed acts to the emerging artist and works in development.
The three day festival is a celebration of circus arts and theatre where you can enjoy a diverse range of outstanding performances in the Big Tops, Cabarets, Sideshows and more! There are a number of fun workshops on offer too including a kids playspace, hula hoop, juggling, acro balance, balloon twisting, tightwire and flying trapeze!
Opening on Friday 29 September and ending at 9pm on Sunday 1 October this is an absolute must-see family friendly event during the school holidays.
Mojo Surf Weet-Bix School Holiday Surfgroms Program at Clarkes Beach, Byron Bay
Mojo stands for FUN and that is exactly what they do best. Combining great fun with surfing and the education required to experience and enjoy the beach in a fun and safe environment. Learn ocean and beach safety, paddling,catching and riding waves, lots of games and most of all – fun, fun, fun!
Outward Bound Rainforest Family Program & Young Explorers Program
Demands on our time and the pressures of modern living can mean that families may miss opportunities to share great experiences together and build strong family relationships. Outward Bound aims to strengthen important family relationships by providing a family get-away with a difference and a bonding experience you’ll never forget with their 5 day family program.
The Young Explorers Program is more than just a school holiday course for teenagers. Outward Bound instructors facilitate each activity to ensure a positive and educational experience is had by all. The 5 day course for youth aged 12-14 offers activities such as a High Ropes Course, Raft Building, Orienteering, Hiking and many more, teenagers on Young Explorer are stimulated in a positive and constructive environment.
Join Summerland House Farm for Pony Rides and a day of fun these School Holidays every Tuesday during the holidays from 10.30am to 1.30pm. Just $5 a ride and bookings not required. Make a morning of it and enjoy a round of mini golf, fun in the waterspray park and a Farm Tractor tour through the avocado orchard!
The Clay Barn are putting on a range of wonderful Pottery Workshops. Join the family pottery, kids pottery or send your older one to Teen Wheel Throwing! Everyone can expect to have a small group of completed pieces ready to be glazed, fired and picked up at a later date.
Join Gabriel Otu at his Children’s African Drum, Dance and Storytelling Workshop every Monday and Wednesday at Byron Theatre. This hands on children’s workshop is all round family fun! Including drumming, dancing and storytelling of the lifestyle in Ghana, West Africa. Gabriel brings all the instruments and everyone has this rare opportunity to participate, learn new skills and share their unique rhythm. Suitable for ages 2+.
Come and enjoy lunch with the kids at the iconic Balcony Bar & Oyster Co in Byron Bay. Between 12 and 2pm on weekdays there is: FREE face painting, HALF PRICE kids meals with healthy menu options for kids and FREE kids colouring in!
There’s also a number of fantastic new shows on at The Brunswick Picture House and Byron Theatre (more info under Shows & Entertainment) plus FREE kids discos happening at both Club Lennox and Cherry St Sports

Circus Arts is a fully equipped, 1200sqm, indoor space offering a range of circus activities from kinder to teens (and adults too!) Try Flying trapeze, Indoor climbing, Circus skills, Aerial Skills, Parkour, Gymnastics to name a few and… if your little one isn’t quite ready to try a class, there’s always the fantastic playspace for littlies to have fun while you can sit back and enjoy a cuppa from the onsite cafe and take advantage of the free wifi.
Also keeping your kids active and off the couch are Ballina Gymnastics who this holidays are offering a morning session on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays during the holidays. These half day classes are open to all – so if you want to try – this is the ideal opportunity!
KidzKlub are offering their half day (afternoon) school holiday program in the centre of town at Byron Bay Community Centre and half and full day sessions at the Lennox Head Cultural and Community Centre. With areas for art and craft, drama, sports and games; the kids can play freely and creatively in each area with the fabulous equipment and materials or join in with structured sessions facilitated by qualified staff.
Based in Ballina, Australian Seabird Rescue are holding their weekday school holiday tours. Learn about seabird and sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation and release. The tour goes for approximately one hour and costs just $5 (CASH ONLY) per person. It’s a fantastic opportunity for kids to learn about the hazards marine life face and a real life insight into seabird and turtle rescue and how we can all be more mindful and proactive in their protection. No booking required – just turn up on the day!
STILL INDOORS BUT…
If your child is feeling creative, there are some fantastic crafty workshops being held by Meet Make Create for children age 5+ where children spend a few hours immersed in artistic creativity. Classes range from Ship In a Bottle and Kite Making to Olli Ella Basket Weaving and Paper Chain Wall Hangings They also offer a MINI MAKERS CRAFT session aimed at non-school aged children twice a week focusing on a variety of sensory projects including painting, printing, collage and sculpture making. The emphasis is the creative process, not the end product and with classes held in a creative space in their Byron Bay Studio – there is no stress about the mess!!

One of the all time fave’s is School Holiday Skate Camp. Byron Bay Skateboard School is offering just 3 days of School Holiday Skate Camp this Spring break. Join them for a tour around all the best skateparks in the area and spend a full day skating with the pros!
Based at The Farm Byron Bay, Farm Kids is holding a number of their fabulous hands-on 3 hour workshops for kids with their exciting themed workshops focused on Pigs and Cows, Medicinal Herbs, Planting, Chooks and Bee Fun. They are also offering their new Farm Kids Mini Farmers Program! Suitable for 7-15 y/o, this full day program introduces children to real life farming. They get their hands dirty and work along side real farmers.
And what is a school holiday without a trip to the Macadamia Castle? Feed the guinea pigs fresh grass, give the Alpacas their favourite treat, deliver some crunchy crickets to the lizards, feed the ducks and chickens and feed fresh hay to the Farmyard animals including baby goats and cows. Not only that, they also offer 2 special hands-on school holiday programs – Wildlife Guardians for 7-11 year olds and Keeper for a Day for ages 12 to 99! (yes adults can do this one too!!). Learn about conservation, caring for our native wildlife and handle lizards, snakes and crocodiles!
SHOWS & ENTERTAINMENT!
Start the holidays with KAPUT! at Brunswick Picture House. Be swept up in the mayhem that is the larger-than-life, clumsy “Mr. Fixit” who takes one step forward and two steps back in a highly skilled, beautifully poignant and hilariously funny mix of chaos, comedy and madness for all ages. Or come and meet MR SPIN as he performs his world-class, award-winning show in the first week of the hols. Juggling, Chinese devil-sticking and mind-boggling manipulations all mixed with mad capped antics and an incredible sense of fun.
There’s equally fun, family friendly and mad antic capers happening at Byron Theatre. In the first week, they present Chores! An action-packed 60 minute family show jam-packed with zany antics as two brothers rush to get their room tidied before their Mum comes in. Using high-energy acrobatics, audience participation and interactive multimedia, families with kids up to 12 years old love this wild comedy adventure. In week two the Trash Test Dummies visit Byron Theatre with their hilarious family comedy show. These world class circus performers and their household wheelie bins take fun to new heights with riotous stunts and an astonishing display of balance, acrobatics, slapstick and juggling.
Plus the Pighouse Flicks Lounge Cinema in Byron is putting on some great kids movies this holidays including Cars 3 (G) and A Monster Calls (PG).
Not to be left out are some fabulous science and craft creations to be made with FREE activities at the local libraries including Indigenous Culture with Delta Kay and Story Stones at Byron Bay; Twig, Yarn & Teepee and Mad About Science at Lennox Head;The Biggest Little Magicians and Wild about Byron Shire Birds at Brunswick Heads; and Fun Science Experiments and Supersize Games at Ballina Library.
Plus, for little ones,The Toy Library comes Byron Bay Library during the holidays with a selection of fun toys and activities for toddlers. Also at Lennox Head Library will have a Puppet Theatre available so you can put on your own Puppet Show.

There are also some awesome FREE activities and events for girls age 12+ at Future Dreamers Girls Club based in central Byron Bay with titles such as Candle Making, Flat-lay Workshop, Songwriting, Botanical Alchemy, Watercolour and a Friday Fright Night Sleepover… I want to go to them all…well except the Fright Night Sleepover – I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to scary movies!
