I can still remember the last school holidays so clearly – as if they were yesterday! To me it feels as if they have come around so quickly – except it’s warming up as we head towards summer.
I’ve already seen plenty of holidaymakers on the beaches this past week and I’m looking forward to joining them a few afternoons over the next couple of weeks!
Byron4Kids What’s On Guide has been inundated with activities and events for the holidays and there’s a huge variety of activities and events for kids of all ages – YES, from TODDLERS to TEENS plus heaps of family friendly options for you to enjoy.

Big Scrub Nature Play – Every child should have memories of adventurous fun with friends! What better way to spend these school holidays out in nature, playing, exploring and learning together with your child?
Big Scrub Nature Play who offer delightful Term Time Nature Playgroups for 2-6 year olds are also offering a School Holiday Program for ages 2-6 with an all-weather, all-outdoor playgroup for little explorers .and Forest School for ages 4-8 for children who are ready to take on more challenging and risky play and activities.

Let’s Go Surfing Byron Bay have designed the perfect lesson for kids (age 7-15) who love surfing occasionally and for families who enjoy the flexibility of not having to commit to an ongoing course.

Either option is a great way to meet some new friends that share the same passion and improve your skateboarding skills. Suitable for kids aged 7 to 12 years.
Or how about getting down and dirty at The Farm Byron Bay! Farm Kids is holding a number of their fabulous hands-on 3 hour workshops for kids with their exciting themed farm animal or produce sessions. Also on offer is their Farm Kids Mini Farmers Program! Suitable for 7-15 y/o, this full day program introduces children to real life farming. They get their hands dirty and work alongside real farmers.
Circus Arts is a fully equipped indoor space offering a range of unique activities from kinder to thrill-seeking teens (and adults too!) Try Flying trapeze, Climbing wall, Circus skills, Aerial Skills, Parkour, Kinder & Pre-circus to name a few and…
further to popular demand they’ve included their exciting Ninja Play classes as an add on to their 1/2 & full day school holiday programs.
if your little one isn’t quite ready to try there’s always the fantastic playspace for littlies to have fun while you can sit back and enjoy healthy snacks & a cuppa from the onsite cafe.
Spaghetti Circus in Mullumbimby also offer half and full day Circus Programs and provide foundation training in aerials, tumbling, acro-balance, mini-tramp, juggling, hula hoops and much more! There are Full Day Workshops for 7-9 & 10-14 year olds, and Half Day Junior Workshops for 4-6 year olds.

We love to spend a day of the school holidays at Summerland House Farm Here you can enjoy a round of mini golf, have fun on the Farm Tractor tour then relax with a picnic in the parklands and cool off in the fun water spray park! You can also delight in local produce at their grocers and find all kinds of souvenirs in their gift shop. It’s a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon with the kids and it is on our list!
Maybe it’s raining, maybe it’s not but whatever the weather it’s always fun to play a game or two at Ballina Tenpin Bowling and when better to go than in the school holidays when they have a special price of just $15 per person for 2 games.
They also light up the lanes between 12 and 4pm and from 7pm onward for GLOW bowling sessions every day of the holidays!
If your child is feeling creative, there are some awesome workshops which have been added to our What’s On Guide – a number of which are FREE.
Come learn how to carve sand like a pro with Sandman Steve from Sandology. In an unforgettable hour and a half you will learn how to make towers, archways, stairs, animals and balls out of just sand and water.

At Ballina Fair Shopping Centre, In week 1 of NSW holidays there’s TIE DYE FUN with Byron Bay Tie Dye for just a $2 donation to fundraise for the Ballina Netball Club. Customers are asked to bring or to purchase their own white T-shirt. The workshops run from 10-2pm outside Target but BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL – so check our What’s On Guide for the booking link!
In week 2 of NSW holidays Kids of all ages will enjoy hands on creative fun with colourful creations with Sand Art. Every child will receive one FREE SandWizard Activity each per day at no cost to the customer. Customers will have the option to laminate their artwork for only $1. Drop in between 10am and 4pm outside Target.
From the people who bring you Bright Sparks After School Art Program – get creative this October School Holidays in Ignite Studio, Ballina. Choose your own adventure – with a choice of four different creative ‘Art Stations’ over two days, participants can choose to attend just one, some or all classes.

As usual, Byron Theatre has got a great line-up of interactive family shows happening over the holidays.
Hairspray Jr performed by local Bright Lights Performance School Senior Musical Theatre students will start the holidays with shows over the weekend of Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 September. A story about one girl’s inspiring dream to dance and change the world, the show celebrates diversity and will bring audiences to their feet with its positive message and sense of humour
Bilby’s Bluegum Melodies is here for 1 day with 2 shows on Wednesday 2 October. Offering hands on percussion fun for 2-7 year olds, with music by much loved Australian composers it’s is the perfect introduction for your little ones to the vast sonic possibilities of piano, woodwinds and percussion, in an intimate and informal music show
Nitboy presented by BANG! Academy of Performing Arts – is a hilariously funny and nit-wittingly contagious adaption of the book Nit Boy written by local author Tristan Bancks. Nit Boy is about a kid called Lewis who has the worst case of nits in world history and the performance is sure to entertain all ages… we can’t wait to go see it!
Have fun with Gabriel Otu at his Children’s African Drum, Dance and Storytelling Workshop. Gabriel brings all the instruments and everyone has the opportunity to participate, learn new skills and share their unique rhythm. Suitable for ages 2+.
HOTA – Home of The Arts on the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise) have fantastic 5 days of fun lined up for kids and families with KIDS TAKE OVER – INTO THE WILD event on from 1- 5 October including Nali & Friends – a show from Dan Sultan and Toonworld Animation Workshop.
Plenty of the activities and workshops are FREE kids including Wilding Wear. Funky Letter Art, The Magic Garden, African Beats & Circus Antics but some do require booking to secure a place. Check our What’s On Guide for more details.
They also have a bunch of FREE movies happening on 3, 4, 5 October with 10.30am showings of The Wild (G), Bridge to Terabithia (PG) and Where The Wild Things Are (PG).
It’s also worth noting that around the back of the building is Evandale Parklands. There’s a swimming lagoon with sandy beach, ample picnic areas with barbecues, plenty of shade under trees and a great fully fenced kids playground with two separate slides and climbing spaces (all underneath a shade sail). The toilet & shower amenities are second to none too! We went to see a morning show at HOTA in the summer holidays in January and spent a lovely afternoon at the lagoon with a picnic.
Both Palace Cinemas in Byron Bay and Ballina Fair Cinemas are showing the latest Family Friendly Movie Releases including Dora & The Lost City of Gold (PG) Angry Birds 2 (G), Abominable (G) & Ugly Dolls (G). Our What’s On Guide lists the daily session times and direct booking links for all movies.
KIDS DISCOS, BINGO, ROVING MAGICIANS, PONY RIDES & MORE!
Cherry Street Sports has plethora of fun and FREE activities to get involved in, starting the school holidays on Saturday 28 September with their Kids Super Hero Disco. During the week choose from Slime & Dream Catcher Making, Grass Head & Friendship Bracelets, Pony Rides, Lava Lamp Making, Biscuit & Cake Decorating and Old MacDonalds Petting Zoo! Cherry Street Sports also offer All Day Thursdays – Kids Eat Free* (*conditions apply) with the purchase of any main meal and from 6-8pm on Thursday evenings enjoy all sorts of tricks from their roving magician!
On Monday 30 September Club Lennox invite you along to kids bingo at $2 per child from 1-3pm with lots of prizes to be won and on Wednesday 2 October they are holding their Circus themed kids disco with loads of prizes and dancing fun.
Following a super-fun event last school holidays with Future Dreamers, – Shorty Brown invites you to bring along your sleeping back and enjoy a night of fun and laughter under the stars as she hosts a magical Tipi Party Sleepover on her Farm.
A great option for tweens and early teens (Ages 11-14) the sleepover takes place on Wednesday 2 October 4.30pm – and costs just $80 (includes dinner, campfire s’mores and breakfast)

All you need to do is bring along pj’s, pillow and a sleeping bag to enjoy a night of fun and frivolity under the stars!
Another wonderful option for girls is happening right at the end of the school holidays on Friday 11 October. SISTERS RISE WORKSHOP uses Yoga, Mindfulness, Games, Craft and a range of fun activities to rise together.Facilitated by Sarah Blangiardo of Move+Make the program tackles important topics for girls age 8-12 with the aim of exploring different ways of expression, supporting connection, providing an emotional toolkit and linking it all back to the bigger picture.

School Holiday Activities at local libraries
There are some fabulous FREE inspirational activities and workshops being offered by the local libraries: Lennox Head, Byron Bay. Ballina Library, Brunswick Heads, & Alstonville including Cubetto The Coding Robot at Lennox Head, Creative Writing Workshop with local author Zanni Louise at Brunswick Heads and The Fauna Fetchers at Byron Bay and Ballina Libraries.

Apart from being a fabulous place to spend a day with the kids, The Macadamia Castle also offers an excellent school holiday program for kids (and adults) with two wonderful & popular workshops. They’ve also created a NEW WORKSHOP for budding photographers – see below!
CRITTER CAPTURE – PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP (Ages 12+)
In this workshop you will learn specialised animal photography from a qualified Keeper and expert photographer. Develop your skills while taking the unique opportunity to get up close and personal to a range of extraordinary animals. It’s also worth noting that if you have a CREATIVE KIDS Voucher still to redeem – you can use it towards this course making it just $25 for a whole days tuition!
WILDLIFE GUARDIANS (Ages 7 -11)
During the school holidays your kids can become Wildlife Guardians and spend the day with the keepers behind-the-scenes in the Animal Park.
KEEPER FOR A DAY (Ages 12+)
Teenagers can spend a day behind the scenes in the animal park with Macadamia Castle’s senior keepers during these school holidays. Find out what working in a captive animal facility is all about.

In Ballina, Australian Seabird Rescue are holding their weekday school holiday tours. Learn about seabird and sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation and release. The tour goes for approximately one hour and costs just $8 (CASH ONLY) per person. No booking required – just turn up on the day!
Or how about a special trip on the world’s first solar powered train – right here in Byron Bay. My kids were thrilled to take a trip on the train with their grandparents who were visiting from overseas last year. You can tie it in with lunch at The Sun Bistro which has an indoor play area as well as a lovely fenced and grassy outdoor area out the back.
