On the opposite side of the road to Shaws Bay just before North Creek joins the Richmond River is a gorgeous public reserve and beach; The Serpentine.
Free of charge on-street parking is available adjacent to the reserve and if it’s all taken, then a little further up the road, past Ballina Oysters there is more parking next to The Serpentine Park public reserve with picnic tables dotted in the shade of the trees.
A shared pedestrian path/cycle way also runs along the length of The Serpentine so it’s easy to get to on foot, by bike or with a stroller. Click here for a pdf copy of cycleways and shared paths along the Ballina Coast.
A gentle sloping pathway leads down to the main entrance of the beach complete with shower although there are also some steps down through the trees from higher up the road.
The shimmering turquoise waters with graded shallow sandy entry offer a refreshing paddling and swimming area. The waters also easily accommodates various non-motorised watercraft: kayaking appears to be a favourite as well as SUP’s plus we saw a number of people fishing too.
It’s worth noting it is not always like this. Heavy rains often dredge up North Creek leaving it running a murky brown colour but on sunny summer days like these…it’s a sheer delight to experience.
We’ve found that high tide is the best time to visit. You can wander down to the long sandbar that appears and disappears depending on the tide but take care at the end as the current can be strong.
The wonderful tree-lined canopy provides plenty of cooler shady spots to escape from the intense summer heat and are also the perfect place for a picnic.
If you are looking for public toilets, you’ll have to head over Missingham bridge to Ballina Skatepark which according to Googlemaps is a 5 minute/400m walk.
There are a number of eateries nearby, most notably The Shaws Bay Hotel which is less than 5 mins walk plus a take-away cafe and coffee shop.
PLEASE NOTE THIS BEACH IS NOT PATROLLED BY LIFEGUARD SERVICES AND IS A NO DOG ZONE
