Winter Holiday Activities & Events for Kids in Byron Bay and Beyond!

I’m still deciding if the last term just flew by in the blink of an eye or if it’s because the kids have had various winter-related illnesses plus a fractured elbow thrown in there that it feels that they haven’t had much of a term. At least with the long nights and cold weather they’ve been sleeping longer so it’s not the usual 6am or earlier wake-up!

I was so taken off guard by the last school holidays – with an Easter break, then back to school for 2 weeks then 2 weeks holidays – that I have been a bit more organised in my planning of school holiday activities this time and my kids are pretty excited when they look at the Calendar on the fridge… they keep checking every day when they come in from school to see if I’ve added anything else  – which I am about to today… there’s SOOOOO much fun stuff happening!

So whether you’re looking for active or creative options or perhaps you simply want them (and you) to be entertained or inspired…

Read on for more details of what’s on offer this holidays!

As always there are some exciting new additions to the Calendar of Events this school holidays and with some days boasting over 25 different activities, events and workshops … I can almost guarantee you won’t be stuck for things to do for or with the kids!

BE ENTERTAINED!

I grew up going to Musical Theatre shows with my grandparents and I’ve passed this love on to my children so we are extremely excited to be going to this new show coming up at Circus Arts!

Circus ArtsPeter Pan Jr
Based on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale, Peter Pan is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family favourites of all time delighting audiences for 60 years! Having been specially adapted for young performers, the youth of the Byron Shire will be bringing it all to life. All with the help of the talented crew at Circus Arts Byron Bay these school holidays!

With 6 performances over 2 weekends, this is the first time Circus Arts has staged a full-scale musical theatre production and Peter Pan JR. is the perfect show for the child in all of us… who dreamed of soaring high and never growing up.

Brunswick Picture House has got a wonderful line-up of family fun shows this school holidays.

The Biggest Little Magicians – Hailing from right here in the Byron Shire, The Biggest Little Magicians are made up of three siblings: Yuvisun, Bob and Diamond, ages 14, 12 and 9, and they’re performing their first show here at the Brunswick Picture House! Suitable for all ages and featuring a mixture of classic and new tricks that have never been seen on stage before, we can’t wait to go to the show!!

Dr Hubble Bubble’s Show  – Everybody loves bubbles and Dr. Hubble is back to show you why! We LOVED this show last time it was here at the Picture House and can totally recommend it! Dr. Hubble will be on hand to take you on a magical journey behind the bubble, as he shows you bubbles in all their glorious shapes and sizes, including the famous “exploda-bubble” and possibly the biggest bubble you’ll have ever seen! One lucky child will even be put inside a bubble, so come along! Don’t miss this fun and funny show for kids of all ages.

There’s fun, family friendly and mad antic capers happening at Byron Theatre and we are so looking forward to seeing Johnny The Jester – Wild & Crazy Magic Show –  Johnny the Jester is one of Australia’s leading entertainers and children’s magicians. His Wild & Crazy Children’s Magic Show is incredibly interactive, and loads of fun. His shows always bring lots of smiles and laughter from the little ones as well as the older ones. At the end of the show you will also get a chance to meet and pat the real star of the show, Stewart the Bunny. Each child will also receive a free balloon animal to take home too!

They are also showing the 1994 movie Black Beauty A wondrous movie version of Anna Sewell’s classic novel about a remarkable horse and the various owners whose lives he transforms. There have been 7 movies made of Black Beauty – and this retelling is celebrated as the best, plus it has been digitally re-mastered in HD 16:9 with surround sound. Like the book it voices the thoughts and feelings from Black Beauty and stars Alan Cumming, Eleanor Bron & Sean Bean.

And, as always, there’s the very popular FREE DISCO’s happening at Cherry Street Sports (Glow Disco theme) and Club Lennox (Superhero’s) with both offering heaps of prizes! Plus Friday Fun with kids bingo and Facepainting at Club Lennox who also offer 2 kids zones and great value children’s and adult meals too!

BE INSPIRED!

The first week of the school holidays we are looking forward to celebrating NAIDOC WEEK

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.

Held in the first full week of July, it is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.

There are HEAPS of inspirational activities happening around the area with Family Cultural Days in both Mullumbimby and Byron Bay and plenty of family friendly activities in Ballina including Jarjums Sports Day, Deadly Disco and the fantastic Yardbalair music festival this Sunday 7th July at Missingham Park. ALL WELCOME ❤ and all listed on the Calendar of Events

Little Splendour
OMG – we are soooooo excited to be checking out Little Splendour this year.  Created and brought to you by event specialists KidzKlub Australia, there is an abundance of simply AWESOME things to do and see for kids – from silent discos, crankin’ kids bands, drumming workshops, roving entertainers, and special shows including one on Saturday from the beloved Justine Clarke plus art and craft galore!

Looking for some long-lasting, earth friendly inspiration?  How about celebrating Plastic Free July with some fabulous FREE workshops at Ballina Fair. There are options to design your own calico bag or make beeswax wraps. Check the Calendar of Events for the dates and times for each one!

Also based in Ballina, Australian Seabird Rescue are holding their weekday school holiday tours. Learn about seabird and sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation and release. The tour goes for approximately one hour and costs just $7 (CASH ONLY) per person. It’s a fantastic opportunity for kids to learn about the hazards marine life face and a real life insight into seabird and turtle rescue and how we can all be more mindful and proactive in their protection. My kids are itching to go back and learn more! No booking required – just turn up on the day!

Have fun with Gabriel Otu at his Children’s African Drum, Dance and Storytelling Workshop at Byron Theatre during the holidays – We sure will be!!  This hands on children’s workshop is all round family fun! Including drumming, dancing and storytelling of the lifestyle in Ghana, West Africa. Gabriel brings all the instruments and everyone has this rare opportunity to participate, learn new skills and share their unique rhythm. Suitable for ages 2+.

So, there you have it.

That is apart from heading down to one of the many beautiful beaches, enjoying a coastal or hinterland walking trail or enjoying a scoot or a skate or a play at any number of our local skateparks and playgrounds… all of which you can find out more about by clicking on the links.
